Our walking football team represented the Canaries at Nationals in St George’s Park on the 6th July. Attached are some pictures of them both at the event and at their training last night (15th July), where ex-Canary Robert Fleck came to support them. It is a massive testament to the success of the group. The group comprises of both male and female members who are all 50+. Some team members talked to us about how important walking football is to them, both as a sport and socially. Team member Dave said: ‘For me taking up walking football has given me a new lease for life. Before joining I hadn’t really been doing any exercise for 2 years and it had been 10 years since I’d played football having retired after an injury, so the walking football group gave me the chance to get back into the sport I love. Since joining the group in February I’ve been a firm regular and now help Alex with coaching the group of 20 odd players. The group is friendly and welcoming to new-comers and we have a good laugh, it’s also helped me shift 1 ½ stone of unwanted weight!’
Fitness in later life (over fifties) walking football sessions run on Tuesday mornings, 10.30-12 on the 3G 5-aside pitches as well as a new drop-in for all ages running on Wednesday evenings 6-7pm. The sessions are a great way to get fit and be active amongst like-minded people with the opportunity to take part in tournaments and fixtures too! Ladies, with the recent success of England’s women’s football team why not be inspired to come and give this a go, all abilities and experience levels welcome.
