A big welcome to all our students at UEA. Hope to see you all regularly this year.



Welcome

Sport is a central part of community life at UEA. The range of sports and recreational activities open to university members is enormous. Participation levels by students and staff are aong the highest at any British University. Opportunities exist at competitive level with the Student Union clubs, at recreational level in the Ziggurat Challenge, as well as casual participation as an individual or with friends.

The Department of Physical Education and Sport (PES) is pleased to offer a wide-ranging programme of sporting, recreational and health-promoting activities. Whether you are a first year student, or a postgraduate we hope you will use the facilities and find a class.course, club or level of competition to suit you.

PES staff are located in the Sportspark (first floor) and you are welcome to call in at any time, we are always available to give professional advice and support.

Using the Sportspark

All full-time undergraduate and postgraduate UEA students on a taught degree course will have their campus card validated free of charge for the length of their course. This will give free access to the Sportspark and the lowest level of activity charges; the cost of this is being met by the University, and Physical Education and Sport.

Joining Instructions

All full-time UEA students will be given a free Educational User Card by the University, for the Sportspark. This will provide free entry to the Sportspark and the lowest level of activity charges.

On arrival at UEA you will be able to have a look around the Sportspark and access the facilities by giving your name at the Sports Reception. Once you have registered at the University and received your campus card, you will need to call in at the Sportspark Reception to activate this card for use in the Sportspark as your Educational User Card.

The activated card must be produced on all visits to the Sportspark or the non user entry and activity prices will be charged.

The Union of UEA Students charges all students wishing to join a sports club an annual “Sports Association Membership Fee” of £30. An additional membership fee will also be charged by individual union clubs. These fees are not connected with the services provided by the University Department of Physical Education and Sport or your use of the University sports facilities including the Sportspark and Colney Lane playing fields.

Use of the Sportspark will be subject to the Terms and Conditions of Use in force, copies of which will be displayed and can be obtained on request.

Keith came to UEA in 1990 having spent 18 years as Director of PE at UWE-Bristol. At UEA Keith's responsibility is principally that of managing the activities of the Department of Physical Education and Sport, which incorporates the management of the Sportspark, strategic planning and overall financial control. He coaches the student mens volleyball team but his own Volleyball career spans more than 25 years including appearances for Great Britain. He qualified as an EVA coach in 1966, a staff coach in 1969 and an FIVB coach in 1972 and coached the GB student team at the world Student games in 1991. He has written several volleyball coaching books.

Rachel came to UEA from Barbados and has worked in the department since 1988, having spent the previous 7 years teaching Physical Education. She is responsible for the development of student sport, including liaising with student clubs and individuals, programming and booking facilities and organising sporting competitions and instructional courses exclusively for students. She co-ordinates the 'inter-school' Ziggurat Challenge and chairs the 'Sports Rep Forum'. She has been closely involved with the Netball club for 16 years, is a qualified AENA 'B' (intermediate) award umpire (1991) and a FENA Umpiring tester (1995) and whilst at Loughborough won 3 BUSA Netball gold medals and a BUSA Bronze in Javelin!
