Stroke-Friendly Strength and Mobility Workout

This gentle routine, designed by Personal Trainer Reece Stimpson, focuses on improving strength, balance and everyday movement following a stroke. Each exercise uses simple, accessible movements that can be done at home with minimal equipment.

For the best results, complete 5 to 10 repetitions of each exercise and repeat this for 3 sets before moving to the next exercise. The full session takes around 10 to 15 minutes and can be done four times a week.

Always work at a pace that feels right for you and take rest whenever you need it.

The Workout

1. Stick Squeeze

Sit comfortably with a stick resting on your lap. Wrap your fingers and thumbs around it and squeeze as hard as you can. Hold the squeeze for two seconds, then release. This counts as one repetition.

2. Stick Front Raise

From the same seated position, hold the stick with arms straight. Lift your arms up in front of you as high as you can, then slowly lower them back down. One raise equals one repetition.

3. Knee Abductors

Sit on a chair with your feet planted shoulder width apart. Gently push your knees outward to the sides while keeping your feet on the floor. Return to the start position. This is one repetition.

4. Leg Extension

While seated, extend one leg out in front of you until it is straight. Keep your thigh level with the ground and pause briefly before lowering. Repeat for the required number of repetitions, then switch legs.

5. Sit to Stand

Sit tall on the edge of a chair. Press through your feet to stand up while keeping your knees apart to engage your glutes. Slowly lower yourself back down to the chair. Each stand counts as one repetition.

6. Standing on One Leg

Use a wall or countertop for support if needed. Lift one foot off the ground and balance on the other leg for up to one minute. Switch legs and repeat. If a full minute feels too long, balance for as long as you can safely.

Safety Reminder
